It's a Start...

Hi everyone,

Work has officially begun for the Lisa Frank horse quilt.  I have almost all of the fabric that I will be using to make it.  As you can see from my first post.  I hand-draw quilt patterns before making them digital.  It just works best for me, since I do not have EQ7 or EQ8 quilt-making software.  On my paper pattern, I have numbered every. single. square. with a number that matches to a color on my "quilt key" that I made to go along with it.  I started with #1 which is the pink fabric.  I am hand-cutting each individual square, so this could take a while just to get the squares cut.  Each square is 1.5 inch by 1.5 inch in size.  Very tiny!  I am so used to cutting larger squares for the other quilts that I have made in the past, it was quite a shock to cut something so tiny.

I am looking forward to the point where I have enough fabric squares cut to begin working on Block A-1.

More to come soon!

Hello Blog World & Lisa Frank Horse Quilt

Hi everyone,

It has been a very long time since I posted anything to a blog.  Some of you may remember me from the Pickles Quilting blog that I had several years ago.  When my daughter was born in 2015 I had to give up all things crafty for a short time because she was my main focus.  Over the last five years, I have slowly started dabbling in sewing/quilting here and there, but I never felt like I did it enough to warrant posting to my old blog.  I have since deleted that old Pickles Quilting blog and started this new blog.  I am very excited about the new name and new look.  There is just something about a fresh new blog landscape that gets me excited to post.  I look forward to posting my creations both quilty and crafty.  I am also looking forward to jumping back into the online quilting world.  There is just nothing better than sharing our passion for quilting and building friendships through a mutual hobby.

Now onto business about actual patterns and quilting.

When I was growing up, Lisa Frank was such a big deal in the 90's.  I am sure some of you remember the vivid colors of her work, but if you don't remember it you should Google it!  Her work is spectacular and any little girl would absolutely love it.  I guess in my mind the Lisa Frank work was always something that stuck out to me because there was just so much going on in each picture.  I could look at them for hours. See example below:

My daughter loves horses and vivid colors and I remembered that there was a Lisa Frank picture like that (see above).  That really got me to thinking...what if I made a quilt like that for my daughter?!?!  She would love it!  I scoured the internet for similar quilting patters only to be sadly let down.  Nothing out there in the vast expanse of the Internet existed that could easily translate into a quilting pattern.  Thankfully, I found a perler bead pattern on Pinterest that piqued my interest.  I was able to take this pattern and change around placements and colors to make it completely my own.  It took me about a weeks time, only working a few hours a day on the pattern, for me to get the pattern the way I wanted it.  No, it doesn't look exactly like a Lisa Frank work, but to me the pattern I created turned out absolutely fabulous.  It is 100 X 100 in size (HUGE!) and will be totally made up of 1 in squares.  Yes, it will take me forever and a day to make this quilt top pattern, but when it is done it will be totally worth all of the effort (and fabric, and thread, and blood, and sweat, and tears) put into it.

Here is just a quick peek into something that I have spent countless hours on so far, and I haven't even started cutting the fabric yet!  Patterns this big will kill you!  And yes, I like to draw out patterns by hand.  I just works for me, but never fear...I will make it all digital for you guys soon.

As you can see, I clearly have my work cut out for me.  My next step is to start cutting the individual 1 inch squares and then I will start the sewing process.  Before I post this pattern to my blog, I want to be sure that I have all of the colors and kinks worked out.  I don't want to post something that I have not tried yet.  As soon as I am finished, this pattern will be posted on my blog for anyone to get and use.  * However, you MUST share pictures of your work/final projects.  I love to see the handy quiltwork of fellow quilters.

Until next time,
